Six years ago I started a novel and really loved the main idea, but I had a hard time matching the paper version to the finished product in my head. I worked with an editor, and try as we might, we couldn’t get it to come together.

Fast forward and I am writing the Between Souls screenplay for the same target audience, but with a different main idea. Or so I thought. As I keep writing, I realize the first story is still struggling to come out. I find myself bringing in some of the same conflicts, developing similar mysteries, asking the same questions.

So now I wonder if the problem I had years ago had nothing to do with the idea but everything to do with the timing. Maybe I needed some time (although 6 years seems like a lot) to step away before I could realize what the true story was. And it seems like the ideas that worked back then are still working now – it’s all coming around again. I hope that is the case. If today’s effort is any indication, I am in a better place and time because the screenwriting is much smoother and faster than before. Now I just need to keep typing. Only 68 pages to go…
